What is A Midwife?

What is a midwife?

Midwives are highly trained, board-certified health care practitioners who provide comprehensive prenatal care and care during labor, birth, and the postpartum period. Our practice also provides well-person gynecological, contraceptive, and pre-conception care as well as in-depth and holistic fertility counseling, intrauterine insemination, and medication abortion.

The midwifery model of care is a collaborative, family-centered, empowering model that focuses on providing patients with individualized care uniquely suited to their specific physical, mental, emotional, and cultural needs.

We work in New York State, where midwives are independent practitioners. We order and interpret diagnostic tests and ultrasounds. We can prescribe medication.

CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives) are registered nurses (RNs) and also have a master’s degree or doctorate in midwifery.

Do I also need to see an OB if I come to you for care?

Nope! We have collaborative relationships with OBs and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, should any complications arise during your pregnancy, labor, or birth, but if all remains normal and low-risk, we are the only providers you’ll see.

Where will I give birth if I come to you for care?

Mt Sinai West Hospital.

Can I see a midwife for all of my routine gynecologic care?

Yes! You can see us for annual exams, pap smears, birth control, vaginitis, STI testing and treatment, medication abortion, and more!  If your care requires referral to a gynecologist for more complicated pathology, testing, or treatment, we will work with you to find the right fit.

Do you accept insurance?

We are not in-network with any insurance company, but our billing team is very successful in getting insurance to pay for our care—even if you don’t have out-of-network benefits. Only a small percentage of our patients pay fully out of pocket for our care. If you do happen to have a plan that will not cover any of our fees, we offer sliding scale and extended payment plans. All testing, lab work, ultrasounds, and prescription medications will be billed directly to insurance at an in-network rate.
